I know the Babywise book that I mentioned has a chapter on starting late - hopefully that one will help! Can't think of any others off the top of my head. :/

Ok love your story and the way you work it. But sadly all I read was "What to expect when you're expecting" had no idea a routine is so importat in a baby's life. So yeah now that my baby is 9 months (he's a breastfed baby and he sleeps with us at his age wakes up up to 4 times a night mostly for the breast, but sometimes is for no reason I think) he's a very happy baby and smart. But we are all lacking sleep. Is there advice or a book so he can start sleeping through the night and then switch him to his crib, I will appreciate it

I do not supplement, but when the baby is interested I will start feeding them solid foods - pureed vegetables and fruits, etc. at maybe 8 or 9 months. They gradually work themselves into a complete meal at the family table (I just use a baby food grinder and they eat whatever we're having.) I breastfeed in the mornings and at bedtime and anytime we just want to cuddle, but they begin to work themselves out of the need for nutrition from me and end up fully weaning by 12 -18 months. Otherwise it is just mama's milk before they start on eating with us at the table.

Thanks for that MaryEllen,
Did you supplement with formula or any other milk during that year?
Could you be more specific with length of breastfeeding for each child. I am a Christian midwife (and mum of seven) and have currently been doing some personal research into nighttime feeding.
Blessings,
Yvette.

Hi Yvette,
I breastfeed for around a year, and sleeping through the night is 8-12 hours.

Oh goodness, it's been a while so I can't remember. I'd say they should nap for at least 45 minutes. And if they consistently fight the nap, surprisingly it's most likely because they need a longer nap, not a shorter one. Being overtired really makes it difficult to sleep. The Rhythms and Routines book will definitely help you out a lot with all this!

I would treat the 7pm like bedtime and the 10 pm almost like a middle-of-the-night feeding. (Keep the lights really low, no talking, put the baby straight back to bed.)
