In reply to <a href="https://www.imperfecthomemaker.com/2015/01/parent-speak-to-kids.html#comment-13627">MaryEllen Bream</a>.

I just found your posts and I have enjoyed all of them so far, as well as, the one on 6 Things I Never Allow My Kids To Say To Adults. Your posts are very encouraging and helpful. I grew up in a home where I was told what to do without question or I was whipped (with several switches tied together, a board, or whatever was handy). I was expected to work a full day in my mother's shop without pay or thanks. Luckily, these things only happened when my father was at work. My father, on the other hand, was loving, kind, and a great influence. I have chosen to raise my children much differently and find this helpful. I want them to have biblical values and to respect authority, as well as, know they are respected and appreciated too. My daughter is one of those children that you can't praise enough and she just glows when you do :-) I try to tell her at least once a day what a miracle from God that she is and that all children are miracles from God. Thank you for sharing your posts so very much!

Thanks MaryEllen for posting the 6 things I never allow my kids to say to adults. I have a young boy of 7 and unsuccessfully trying to implement respect, greatfullness and appreciation for the lucky life he leads. Quite often I say all the loving encouraging words. I spend time with him encourage as lovingly as I can. Thank you for reinforcing that the choices we make have an effect on our loved one's lives.

In reply to <a href="https://www.imperfecthomemaker.com/2015/01/parent-speak-to-kids.html#comment-13623">Tianna</a>.

Thanks for your comment, Tianna, and thanks for speaking about the harmful effects of parenting without authority. It grieves me that some folks don't understand that exercising your authority IS the loving thing to do. Children need protection and guidance and they won't have that if they aren't taught to listen to the ones who are supposed to be doing that for them. I am sorry you have experienced this, but I'm glad you are doing your best to do things Biblically in your own home! I will do my best to continue encouraging parents to follow God's Word in their parenting rather than adopting the popular worldview.

Hi! I just wanted to say I love this post, but more importantly the one on 6 things I never allow my kids to say to adults. I grew up without a framework for respecting authority, and it crippled me most of my life. My mom had always (and continues to) view me as a sister or friend. I cannot even begin to tell you the negative impact that has had on my life. And yet, it is hard to find advise for traditional child rearing. I try to implement many of your suggestions, and they are great! Thank you for speaking up for biblical values!

I am a mother of three girls and when a divorce took me a long distance away (I'll spare the details) my girls always hear the above phrases along with "I want you to be happy" "Never forget who you are and where you're from" "Above all else love God then yourself, someone else next, and never love things because things can be replaced" It's amazing what divorce can add to a relationship, even if it isn't a perfect one.
