Just found this, due to your email newsletter, and I'm so happy I did!! We have been really struggling too, my kids are natural night owls and sleep in until usually 9 or later, but after a long camping trip and now getting ready for new preschool (starts at 8 agg!)has had the girls waking up earlier but not going to sleep any earlier. We definitely need to do this as well. I agree that focusing on earlier bedtime helps the whole day run more smoothly... but even if the day is not smooth still trying to get them down as early as possible will help. Thanks for the motivation and reminder to just do one thing at a time!!!

I really needed this! Last night my little one didn't get to bed until 10! The fridge broke yesterday and lately it just seems like it has been one thing after another. I use to get her to bed by 8 but with having daycare kids here until 6pm I have found it hard to get everything in by 8. I do think I will start to focus on this one thing.

Earlier for us right now is 8:00. We've been so bad that even if they don't make it to bed until 9:00, that's still earlier than we've been getting them to bed. I do put them all to bed at the same time. As long as they make it to bed before 9:00, I allow the two older ones to read a chapter of a book before they go to sleep. (They use a flashlight in their bed so that the lights can be out for the younger ones.) Maybe that would work for your older ones and getting the baby to sleep? Get the lights out, but let them have a flashlight to read for a little bit? I bet it would them be quiet and settle down enough to get him to sleep. Something to try at least!

I'm struggling with mornings too, but we are in a different place so often that the routine evades me. But I haven't thought of how focusing on bedtime could improve other things in the day. Out of curiosity...what time is "earlier" bedtime for your kiddos? We aim for 8-8:30, but it often turns into 9:00 or after by the time book is read, prayers are said, and everyone is tucked in. Do all of your kids go at the same time (except the newborn)? Or do your "bigs" stay up a little later? I am finding the baby is usually the last one I deal with, because I need the others settled to get him to sleep well (they usually all end up in the same room), but really he should be going to bed first and he is usually showing signs of being ready.

Thank you for posting about this because I am so struggling in both bedtimes and mornings as well! And you are right, I need to focus on fixing one thing at a time instead of trying to overhaul my entire life/routine/household at the same time! Looking forward to reading about your new morning routine. And, yes, I am going to work on earlier bedtimes tonight! I better get a move on! ;)
