Yes, if you are a believer you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you who will guide you into all truth! (John 16:13) No one else needs to do that for you!

I think one of the greatest hindrances in the body of Christ is refusing to allow Christ to be the head. We would rather some man or woman who seems Godly to teach us through books etc. than to pick up His Word and find the answer for ourselves. The Word of God is alive and it can teach us what we need to know for every situation we come up against if only we would recognize it as the only and final authority in our life. The Word of God is alive. His Holy Spirit is alive and is a good teacher. Some believers avoid the Bible in hopes that another person is better able to teach them but that's where the lies and deception have a way to creep in. So my simple suggestion to any wife is to get into the Word and let it guide you into being the wife that God has called and equipped you to be:
Matthew 22:36-40
New International Version
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

You’re right that what you do is a reflection of your heart. That’s why when we focus on the “doing” part we have it backwards. When we tend to our inner man and renew our minds daily that we have been given all the power and holiness of Christ, all the rest flows outward from that. (There’s a lot to say here, which is why I hope folks will click through to the other article linked in this post that expands on this topic.)
I also agree with you that we should be godly even when others aren’t, and that what is in the heart is where the focus should be. That’s why a wife seeking for things she can “do” to better her situation is not the solution. Once again, it’s backwards. A wife who focuses on the “doing” - whether that’s to try to attain some type of “godly wife status” in her own mind or whether it’s in hopes of appeasing a harsh husband - will forever be spinning her wheels. Godliness is not attained by our works; it’s already been bestowed upon all who have received Christ and have been made a new creation. We need only walk in it.

This is so well put! I’m glad you had the foresight to see through the spiritual manipulation at the time, I was indoctrinated by these books and it did not serve me well. It did not matter what my husband thought, I was a failure according to these books and my husband disappointed me by failing his “role.” We are both much happier now that I have rejected this scripture twisting!

I believe what you "do" is important because it's a reflection of where your heart (or treasure) is. Also, things like keeping an orderly home is a reflection of our relationship with God. He does everything in good order, right? He is not the author of chaos or confusion. From my experience, the best question to ask is "how can I be a godly wife?" And that answer only can be found un the Bible and thru prayer. Submit to God and he will show each of us how to submit to our husbands. We can and should be godly even when others aren't. That doesn't mean we don't stand up for what's right.... no, we stand. We just do it in a way that's loving and pleasing to God. We use his word (which is alive) and let it do the work. We don't stand on our own pride or from being offended or out of spite. And, we pray over everything. There may be a time God wants us to speak, and there are times he wants us to hold our peace. Because somethings only he can work out. In the end, it's all really a heart issue. Submit and do what's pleasing to God, which is being a godly wife, and he will be able to work in and thru you to accomplish his expected end.
